Dear Brutus,

Someone asked me on a TWIRP date. What does this mean and is it serious?

Sincerely,

Flustered Freshman

Dear Flustered Freshman,

While some people make a big deal about TWIRP Week, it’s really nothing serious. It’s basically a Sadie Hawkin’s date–where the girl asks the guy–every night but all events are group oriented. Some girls ask their friends and some even ask a different guy for each night of the week. TWIRP Week is just a fun way to get to know your classmates and forget about the stress of school for a few hours. There’s no need to ruin friendships or start roommate battles because of it. So, if you think you’ll have a good time with the girl, go for it and enjoy a fun night with a friend. You can also get a group of friends together and go as a group; it’s just as fun this way, if not more fun. If this is a girl you’re interested in, then you can definitely take it as a more serious date and see where it leads; just remember to keep it light and fun. Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Brutus

Dear Brutus,

If someone has a boyfriend back home but has a friend here that she thinks would be fun to ask on a TWIRP date, is it okay for her to ask him?

Sincerely,

Asking for a friend

Dear Asking for a friend,

As long as she is asking him strictly as a friend and he is aware that this is just a fun time for you to hang out as friends, then there’s no problem. However, if there might be some romantic interest on either side, then I would recommend she step back and think about the situation. If the guy is someone she can see herself dating, then she needs to evaluate the current relationship she has back home. If she is reluctant to break up with her current boyfriend but is attracted to the guy here, then no, she should not ask him out. Even if it’s just for fun, if she has even the slightest romantic feelings for this boy, it could open up a whole lot of problems. However, if she doesn’t see her current relationship going much further or it is not as serious as she wants, then I would recommend that she end that current relationship before pursuing a new one; and that includes before asking a guy she’s attracted to on a TWIRP date. Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Brutus
