Student leaders organize Haiti project

Student leaders spent an hour last Thursday in the SUB 7 discussing ways to help raise Haiti relief funds.

"I don't like to wait around for someone else to do something," said junior Elizabeth Naberhaus, who organized the meeting. "I have a heart for the devastation in Haiti and I want to help now."

The students decided to collect non-perishable food items and blankets over the course of a two-week drive. Also, Resident Assistants will be collecting lightly worn clothing, which can be dropped off in designated boxes in the dorms. All donations will be sent to Haiti through various churches and drop-off centers in the Johnson City area.

In addition to the food and clothing, there is also a great need for monetary donations. Funds collected will be sent to Samaritan's Purse to purchase hygiene kits. Even as little as seven dollars will buy a toothbrush, toothpaste, a wash cloth, soap, shampoo and two rolls of toilet paper.

"Nothing gives me more joy than to see college students rally around a cause together," Hart Hall Resident Director Katy Mosby said. "We shouldn't be afraid to dream big … Our God is big."

Donations can be dropped off at display tables in Derthick and Sutton lobbies on Tuesday after convocation. Collection began last night at Vespers and will continue for the next two weeks.
