Who would have thought that one water buffalo could "lead a hungry family out of poverty?" Alphi Chi National Honor Society thought about this and held a trivia night, raising money to purchase a 250-dollar water buffalo through Heifer International to donate to a Filipino family.

According to the Heifer International company website, "In poor Filipino villages, water buffalo from Heifer provide draft power for planting rice and potatoes, milk for protein and manure for fertilizer and fuel." The organization works with communities to end hunger and poverty by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide.

As an Alpha Chi service project, juniors Katie Linder and Rachel Landry organized "Buffaloes against Hunger Trivia Night" held last Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the lower level of Seeger Chapel.

Seven groups entered the competition, each giving 25 dollars in entrance fees. A little competition goes a long way-Alpha Chi raised over 250 dollars between the teams' entrance fees and other donations. They exceeded their monetary goal and are able to purchase a water buffalo through Heifer International.

The contest consisted of three rounds of ten questions in each round. The questions covered multi-cultural issues, poverty awareness and the Philippines, where the water buffalo will be donated. The top two teams at the end of the three rounds would continue to the Championship round.

"The Librarians are going to be a tough team to beat," sophomore Sam Beale of Team CEBU said. Members of the Librarian team included Public Services Librarian Jeff Harbin, Administrative Assistant for Academic Affairs Debbie Harbin and Anna Jones, wife of Tony Jones, who brought her degree in social studies to the table.

On the other hand, the Young Turks team consisting of Director of Campus Activities Tony Jones, Joe Brown, Grant Foster and professor Lee Blackburn felt confident.

"The competition is pretty weak," Director of Campus Activities Tony Jones said. The Young Turks went on to lead the first two rounds.

However, during round three, The Librarians caught up. The Librarian team took first place last night at "Buffaloes Against Hunger Trivia Night" hosted by Alpha Chi.

Being nerdy pays off after all.
