When Tasha Golden of Ellery opened her mouth to sing, banging out notes on her keyboard while Justin Golden accompanied her on guitar, heads turned and murmuring quieted. The husband and wife duo created a sound that filled the SUB7 coffeehouse to the brim last Friday night.
"I was excited to hear that Ellery was coming to Milligan again," junior Kelly Carnathan said. "They have a really unique sound and thought-provoking lyrics."
About 35 people attended this week's coffeehouse. Ellery, an indie-pop band, played for about an hour but attendees stuck around for another hour after the show, mingling, drinking coffee, buying CD's and talking with the band.
"They're really approachable and conversation is easy with the artists," freshman Samantha Holley said. Holley works with freshman Rebecca Miller to organize the coffeehouses.
Between songs, Tasha shared characterizing anecdotes, including one that exemplifies her skill in annoying her OCD husband, who cannot sleep until all of the doors in their house are closed.
"As soon as he closes all of the doors and gets settled in bed, I get up and open one of the doors," Tasha said. "He pretends that it doesn't bother him but eventually he has to get up and close it."
Ellery wrote one of their songs, "Lay Your Head Down," from a similar game. This time, Tasha was annoying her husband by putting her fingers on the frets of his guitar while he played, which created a melody that got stuck in Tasha's head. Closing with this song, they compared it to a lullaby.
Though not currently touring, Ellery made the six-hour trip down to Milligan from their home in northern Kentucky. They are currently working on their next album, which is scheduled to come out this summer. They are funding its release by pre-order sales.

The next and last coffeehouse of the semester is schedule for March 20 and will be a fundraiser for Tom's shoes. The cost of shoes is 25 dollars and Matthew de Zoete will be returning to Milligan to play for the evening.
