Starting this fall, Milligan will offer new opportunities for students who are interested in making videos and working with computers and media.

On April 14, Milligan's academic committee approved two new minors for the communication department: digital media and broadcasting.

"We already have a film study minor," said Associate Professor of Communications Carrie Swanay. "The idea behind the new minors is to provide students with more options when they show interest in digital media or broadcasting."

The new minors are both 18 credit hours.

For the broadcasting minor, 15 of the credits will come from the following classes: introduction to mass media; digital video production and non-linear editing; broadcast writing, production, and performance; broadcast lab; and radio lab. The other three credits will be selected from a list of other communications classes.

In the digital media minor, 12 hours will come from film and TV aesthetics, digital video production and non-linear editing, digital audio production, and digital imaging. The remaining six hours would be selected by the student from a range of other communications classes.

These new minors are designed for students who either excel in this area or who might need more expertise in these areas for the jobs they want to do in the future.

"(The) digital media and broadcasting minors can really help a ministry major because, in the progressive churches of today, movies and multimedia are a major part of church services," said sophomore Bible major Derek Koone.

The minors will also benefit students with other majors who just want to learn more about video productions and broadcasting.
