The Milligan board standing committee on Student Development, composed of trustees, met with faculty members April 25 to discuss student development during this concluding school year.
Vice President of Student Development Mark Fox led the meeting, which addressed both the growth of Milligan's enrollment and recent improvements on campus.
To start the meeting, Fox commended the record enrollment of 1,014 students in the fall of 2007 and eagerly announced the spring of 2008 enrollment of 1,013. Milligan usually loses between 100 and 150 students during the transition from fall to spring semester, but enrollment exceeded expectations this year. Although a small group of students graduated in December, 25 traditional undergraduates transferred into Milligan for spring semester.
Fox next addressed the plans to make the campus safer, which include the recent installation of new light poles on campus. Milligan also purchased four emergency phones that will be installed this summer at strategic locations around campus: on the outside wall of Sutton Hall, on the Mary Sword Commons, between the Faculty Office Building and the McMahan student center and between Sutton Hall and the Steve Lacy Field House. Fox said these locations were selected because they have the most foot traffic at all times of the day and days of the week.
He said that an emergency notification system will be launched this fall. In this system, a text or audio message will be sent to student and faculty cell phones in case of an emergency. According to Fox, Milligan intends to have a booth set up at registration, allowing anyone to sign up for the free emergency service.
Fox then praised the two-year transformation of the Spiritual Formation Program.
"Students have really stayed on track," Fox said.
He said Milligan's Spiritual Formation Program now offers twice as many opportunities than it did two years ago to allow students to collect the 150 credits required to graduate.
