The women's tennis team finished second overall in the AAC Tournament on April 18 and 19, earning the team a trip to the NAIA Region XII Tournament.

The men's season ended after a first-round loss in conference tournament matches.

The Lady Buffs received a bye in the first round of tournament play after finishing second in the regular season.

In the second round, the doubles team of sophomore Melissa Grgat and junior Sara Hopson lost a competitive match at 8-6.

"I'm really excited the way the team has come together and the way we really fought hard over the tournament," said Grgat. "Finishing second in conference and competing in Regionals next week is a big step forward for us girls as a team."

After the disappointing start, the freshman duo of Caitlin Conley and Jessie Rose Remegi cruised to an 8-1 win in the second round. Sophomores Janie Mullins and Laura Bowman advanced to the third round, winning by default.

Hopson fared much better in singles action, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Mullins also won convincingly 6-3, 6-1.

In the final round of competition, the Lady Buffs were overwhelmed against Union College, ranked 23rd in the nation.

Freshman Caitlin Conley won the only match for Milligan, as Union College took the AAC title with an overall score of 5-1.

Conley won her first set 6-3 in the final round of singles action and was ahead 3-1 in the second before her opponent retired due to injury.

"Conley has had a stellar freshman campaign at Milligan," said Head Tennis Coach Ron Worrell. "I'm so proud of this team."

The Lady Buffs now will look to prepare for their next opponent, Midway College (Ky.) .

"This will be a first time experience for me," said Hopson. "I could not be more excited to have Milligan host the regional tournament, as well as play in it."

NAIA Region XII Tournament action begins today at 1 p.m. at the Mathes Tennis Center and will conclude with tomorrow's match, which begins at 9 a.m.

The men's season concluded after no athlete advanced to the second round of competition in AAC Tournament play.

"We struggled this year as a team," said sophomore Johnathon Ryan as he reflected on the team's performance this season. "All the guys worked hard and hopefully the team will be a lot stronger next year."

With only two seniors graduating this May, the team will build upon the experience gained this season in preparation for next year.
