A new coffeehouse, Bebettes Beignets & Coffee, will soon be opening its doors to the Johnson City community. The coffee shop will be located on West Walnut Street, and the official opening date will be made public soon.

According to a social media post from Bebettes, they are a “coffeehouse that serves New Orleans style premium coffee and lattes, and fresh made-to-order beignets.” This new coffee shop will join the likes of Dos Gatos Coffee Bar, The Willow Tree Coffee House and Music Room, Open Doors Coffeehouse and other coffeehouses in and around the Johnson City area.

This new coffeehouse coming to town could be seen as another sign of the growth for Johnson City. The Milligan community, especially the residences of Johnson City, have noticed a shift and growth in their hometown. Freshman Connor Morgan and sophomore Jemimah Ndune both give their perspectives on Johnson City and its growth.

Morgan and Ndune both agree that the city’s growth is evident in the addition of things like the new parks and buildings, expanded roads, restaurants and businesses, and even the more frequent public activities throughout the year.

“I personally love seeing my city grow,” Ndune said. “Old buildings are getting torn down to build new buildings! Growth also means that new jobs will be coming in the near future, which will continue to grow the city even more.”

Morgan also has a positive outlook on the way Johnson City is moving. He noticed that economically the city will continue to grow, and he also liked that “there are more things to do for fun.”

So why do Milligan students believe Johnson City is trending the way that it is?

Morgan believes the local universities and the Quillen College of Medicine play a role in the development of the town. Ndune also noticed the way the colleges and universities in the area contribute to the city’s growth. “I think one reason is that some students who graduate from NorthEast, East Tennessee State University, or Milligan end up staying in Johnson City because of job opportunities.”

“Another contribution to the growth is that small business owners want to get started, and I think Johnson City is perfect for that,” Morgan stated.

Schools and small businesses are not the only things attracting people to Johnson City. Festivals like Little Chicago, Blue Plum, and Umoja give people a reason for people to come to Johnson City. The vast amount of food and restaurants makes the town attractive as well.

To Morgan, however, “It’s the most beautiful part of Tennessee, and that alone may be the reason why people are attracted to this city.”

Now one can only wait. Wait to find out the impact of Bebettes Beignets & Coffee, and wait to see the continued growth of Johnson City, Tennessee.
