COVID-19 spread throughout the world at a rapid rate in the early months of 2020. Since its outbreak, scientists and health officials have worked to keep track of cases as efficiently as possible. Here are some of the most recent numbers.

For the United States, there are close to 7 million active cases and close to 200,000 reported deaths. As September continues on, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports a declining trend in the number of cases since July. The number of deaths remains relatively low compared to cases.

As for Tennessee, the number of confirmed cases ranges close to 190,000 with 2,310 confirmed deaths. The number of cases is in fluctuation but the Tennessee Department of Health shows a decline in case rate.

The local counties that border Milligan University also report differing numbers. Carter County reports 1,147 cases while Washington County reports 2,239 confirmed cases as of today. Unicoi County reports a remarkably low number of cases at 283 confirmed. Sullivan County reports 2,121 cases and Johnson County is at 675 confirmed cases.

Universities and colleges have not been immune from the spread of COVID-19. East Tennessee State University, a university located in close proximity to Milligan, reports on its dashboard 25 confirmed cases on campus with the infected being put into isolation. The university does report 185 recovered cases since the start of the pandemic.

Milligan’s dashboard reports one active case among the student population. 22 cumulative cases have been reported combining both student and teacher populations.

Bill Greer commented, “I’m very proud of our faculty, staff, and students for being so mindful of our collective health. I think the level of personal and mutual responsibility everyone is assuming speaks to the sort of community we are, and I’m praying that everyone will continue to follow the basic protocols we’ve established and that our numbers will continue to be very low.”

As the number of reports remains a very fluid situation, Stampede recommends keeping further track of COVID-19 through additional resources. Visit the WHO’s website, Tennessee Department of Health’s website, or even Milligan University’s dashboard for up to date information made public daily.
