Milligan opened a new campus resource this semester — the writing center — located in the basement of Welshimer Library. The center officially opened on Sept. 2, with an open house on Sept. 3 where students had the opportunity to win gift cards.
The writing center is a free service available to all enrolled students for any type of writing help. It is open Sunday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m.
Students can schedule up to two one-on-one appointments per week, either online or in person. Walk-ins are accepted when available. The center also offers small-group workshops on topics such as writing exam essays for HUMN 101 and understanding plagiarism in the U.S.
Grete Scott serves as director of the writing center. She is also director of developmental studies and an instructor of composition at Milligan, specializing in writing, research, study skills, rhetoric and reading. She is joined by a team of writing coaches with experience in a wide range of fields, including business, mechanical engineering, education, multimedia journalism, political science, psychology, criminology, communications, legal studies, international studies, fine arts, humanities, graphic design, biblical and theological studies, English, history, Greek, philosophy, curriculum and teaching (M.Ed.), humanities (M.A.), Christian care and counseling (M.Div.), occupational therapy (OT) and historical theology (M.A.).
“In short, our goal is to foster stronger, more confident writers through collaborative conversation and feedback,” Scott said.
Additionally, the center hosts “Food & Friends: International Social Hour” twice each week to support international students. Each session features one American or international food to taste while students share about their lives — no writing required. Students are invited to bring their own drink and attend either Sundays from 3 to 4 p.m. or Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m.
