The Milligan Orchestra performed its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, celebrating a variety of musical styles with the theme “Baroque, Blues and Broadway.”

The program included “Memphis Blues” by W.C. Handy, “Organ Concerto in F Major, Op. 4, No. 5” by G.F. Handel, and “Make Our Garden Grow” from Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.

Along with the orchestra, the concert featured music professors and instructors Alena Carhart and Noah DeLong, as well as Rebecca McClain, who provided accompaniment and played the organ.

Carhart said preparing for this concert meant “warming up her range” so she could sing higher and “drinking lots of water.”

Carhart said the most enjoyable part of the concert was collaborating with another professor.

She sang the soprano parts for both “Shenandoah” and “Make Our Garden Grow,” with DeLong singing tenor.

“I enjoyed playing different genres of music. My favorite song was selections from Fiddler on the Roof,” said violinist Annalise Burns.

Burns said that to manage nerves before performing, she “tries not to think about it.” She described the violin as being similar to the soprano voice in a choir. Burns is a high school junior and dual enrollment student at Milligan.

Milligan’s annual Christmas Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6-7 in Seeger Chapel. Tickets are $5, and reservations are required.
