The Milligan campus community gathered under the tent at Mary Sword Commons on Oct. 27 last night for the annual Oktoberfeast celebration. The event, inspired by Germany’s traditional Oktoberfest, offered students and staff an opportunity to experience a bit of German culture on campus.
The tent was decorated in a classic German style, featuring blue and white colors, long tables and festive lights. Traditional German music played in the background, creating a cheerful and authentic atmosphere. Those who helped organize the event contributed to the theme by wearing hats styled after traditional German attire.
The event offered a variety of German foods, such as sauerkraut and spätzle. However, for authentic German cuisine, students might need to travel to Hildesheim, said Emily Haas, a sophomore German student.
“The food is not really authentic, but I get it — they cook for a lot of people, and it’s hard to really hit that authentic spot. I’d prefer my own spätzle but it’s still a fun event,” Haas said.
Director of Campus Activities Juan Villalba said organizing this year’s Oktoberfeast in the tent on Derthick Lawn took more than two months and came with several challenges.
“Every time you have an event where you’re doing food outside the cafeteria, it brings some logistical problems,” Villalba said. “But Pioneer does a great job by helping with making sure that all the food is taken care of.”
The Milligan Campus Activities Board sought help from German students, including Haas, who compiled the German music and helped create a warm and lively atmosphere in the tent. For more information about upcoming activities, visit milligan.edu/life/get-involved/campus-activities-board.
