MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. — The Milligan University junior varsity women’s basketball team used a solid second half and strong interior defense to earn a 59-48 win over Southwest Virginia Community College on Monday night at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
Milligan led 26-16 at halftime despite early shooting struggles. The Buffs settled in after the break, improving their ball movement and shot selection.
“We had a hard time hitting some shots in the first half,” said guard Emma Cutshall. “I think they started to fall a little better in the second half.”
Milligan’s defense near the basket was a major factor in securing the victory. The team kept Southwest Virginia from getting easy shots in the paint, forcing the visitors to keep difficult jump shots for the majority of the game.
“I don’t think they got many points in the paint,” Cutshall said. “We forced them into some uncharacteristic shots.”
A strong student section, led by Milligan’s flag football team, added energy throughout the game.
“I thought the atmosphere was great,” Cutshall said. “We had a good portion of the flag football team show up, really great to see the culture and support for us.”
Milligan’s next JV women’s basketball game is Nov. 20 at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse against Bryan College. For more information, visit milliganbuffs.com/sports/jv-womens-basketball.
