On April 1, around 50 Milligan students, faculty and alumni joined together with individuals from the Tri-Cities community for the second annual Wholehearted 5K on Milligan’s campus.

Victoria Rivera, a senior sociology major, organized the event for the second year in a row.

“This 5K was one of the best turnouts we have had,” she said. “We also topped our goal of $1,000.”

All of the proceeds from the Wholehearted 5K went to Wholehearted Orphanage in Haiti.

The orphanage is currently working on an expansion project to increase the orphanage from one home to 12 homes. Each building would house eight kids and altogether house 96 children.

Rivera said Wholehearted Orphanage is very important to her as well as a couple of other students on campus.

Rivera traveled to Haiti with Daniela Cortés and Mattie Milliken during the summer of 2014 to volunteer with the orphanage and has been involved with Wholehearted Orphanage since 2011.

“This orphanage is one that we are very familiar with since we know the kids there personally,”  Rivera said. “The relationships from going and meeting these kids really made it personal.”

Rivera will be graduating in May and looks forward to passing off the head of command to someone else who cares just as much about Wholehearted Orphanage as she does.

“I have learned how important it is to care about things outside of ourselves, and find something that we care about, and invest in it,” Rivera said.
