This past Thursday, Milligan held the Study Abroad Fair on the second floor of Derthick. Several booths were set up to display the several opportunities students have to get off of Milligan’s campus and study abroad. Several of these opportunities are major-specific, but some are also build for general credit.

The countdown to the Humanities Europe Tour

The booths that were there included both the Humanities USA Tour and the Humanities Europe Tour, the National Parks Road Trip, the New York City Semester in Business, Study in Spain (Maymester in Oviedo), Philippines Field Study, the Student Arts College International (SACI) program in Italy, a Semester in Journalism in New York City and a Semester in China.

Katy Priest, a junior in social work, represented the Philippines Field Study booth. The booth promoted the chance for social work majors to spend a semester in the Philippines practicing social work with non-profit organizations. “The organizations we would be working with deal with problems such as HIV and AIDS, poverty, and abuse, and are active in finding a solution to stop these problems over there,” said Priest.

Art Brown, assistant professor of Communications, was promoting SACI, the semester in Florence Italy. Students would be able to study graphic design and animation in depth in the birthplace of the Renaissance. “Even if you aren’t a graphic design major, this would still be a great opportunity to broaden your skill set as a Comm major,” he said, “and with their program being compatible with ours, you wouldn’t miss a beat with your credits.”

The Humanities Tours have always been a great way to see the world and also receive credits towards the required four semesters of Humanities. The U.S.A. tour is a one-week trip along the eastern side of the U.S. and is worth one credit hour. It is the cheaper option of the two tours and offers several historical sites and art pieces for a cost less expensive than the Humanities curriculum.

The European tour is a multi-week tour of cities across Europe that have significance in the context of the Humanities program. This year will be mainly based in Greece and the surrounding countries and islands. It is less expensive this year due to the amount of students going in the summer, and there are still spots open!

With so many opportunities, it can be difficult to choose just one trip! Milligan is proud of its ability to provide so many cultural and major specific experiences. Not many students can say that they got to travel Europe for credit or had the opportunity to spend a semester in NYC; all are unique experiences that will end in valuable knowledge gained and long-lasting memories made.
