The winners of the Jeanes Honors Scholarships were recognized by Milligan College on April 1. Incoming freshman, Gabrielle Hammond and Evan Magness are the recipients of the full-tuition scholarships. According to milligan.edu, Hammond and Magness were chosen due to their outstanding academic ability, commitment to scholarly pursuits, sincere Christian faith and their service to others.

The Jeanes Scholarship is named after former Milligan President Dr. Donald Jeanes and it is one of the defining features of the Milligan Honors Program. The two scholarships are designed to provide an advanced opportunity for high-achieving students from all majors.

The award helps build and improve upon Milligan’s Honors Program. “The Jeanes Honors scholarships most definitely benefit the honors program as well as the campus as a whole,” said Michael Blouin, co-director of the honors program and associate professor of English and humanities. “Historically, these students have served as invaluable representatives of the program by modeling what it means to be a servant-leader within an intentional community of scholars.”

The scholarship can be maintained for four years, as long as the recipients continue to meet the minimum requirements set by Milligan. This generous opportunity is made possible by Clarinda Jeanes Roe who underwrites the scholarship in memory of her late husband Donald Jeanes.

Magness is from Johnson City and attends Science Hill High School. According to milligan.edu, during his time at SHHS, Magness has been a member of the mountain bike team, served as editor-in-chief of the Hilltopper Herald and served as captain of the improv team. He was also recognized by the Tennessee Governor’s School as an AP Scholar of Distinction.

Hammond is from Naperville, Illinois and attends Naperville North High School. During her high school career Hammond has been a member of the National Honor Society and Model UN club and she received the Illinois State Scholar Award. On top of her academic pursuits, Hammond competes on the golf and lacrosse teams. She also serves as a board member for a student-led outreach program called KidsMatter.

These two applicants were selected by the Honors Program Committee. “The committee consists of faculty members who are involved in the Honors Weekend interviews and scholarship selection,” said Lee Harrison, vice president for marketing and enrollment. “This year that committee consists of Michael Blouin (Co-Chair), Amy Edmonds (Co-Chair), David Campbell, Aimee DePriest, Jeff Giesey, Leslie Hanneken, Susan Higgins, Phil Kenneson, and Michael Whitney.”
