Jaycie Jenkins was awarded the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Jan. 25. Jenkins, a freshman, is excited about receiving this honor and recognizes her team’s role in her success.

“It’s definitely exciting, being a freshman. My teammates are really good,” says Jenkins. “When I open up the post they’re giving me the ball. I try to read whenever players are shooting to go rebound and put up the offensive board and put it back.”

Jenkins is ranked top four in four statistical categories in AAC women’s basketball.

Jenkins’ rebound statistics have her ranked at No. 2 in rebounds in the AAC with an average of 8.4 rebounds per game. Jenkins had 18 rebounds, a new career-high, against Tennessee Wesleyan University on Jan. 23.

In the AAC, Jenkins is ranked No. 4 in two other categories as well, with a shooting percentage of 46.6% and an average of 15.8 points per game. She recorded two double-doubles in the Buff’s games against Truett McConnell and Tennessee Wesleyan, averaging 16.5 points and 14 rebounds per game.

This is Jenkins’ first weekly award of the season. The freshman has collected 269 points overall, which ranks her at No. 2 in the conference for points scored.

Jenkins is looking forward to the rest of the season and the opportunity to improve the team’s record and standing in the conference.

“We’ve been playing better and hopefully we’ll go into the tournament and pick up momentum and have some upsets in the tournament,” Jenkins said.
