“Oh, the thinks you can think when you think about Seuss!” Milligan’s musical theatre program presented “Seussical, the Musical” during homecoming weekend, Oct. 22-25.

Alena Carhart, assistant professor of musical theatre and voice, served as the artistic and music director for this semester’s production. Carhart said the team wanted the show to be “a fun show for the entire family for homecoming” when choosing the production. They also “loved the music and lightheartedness” of the show.

“The most enjoyable part for me was seeing the show all come together and the excitement of the cast and crew,” Carhart said. She said she hopes the show reminds audiences to have fun and reinforces the message that “a person’s a person no matter how small.”

Freshman musical theatre major Annelise Lugo played JoJo in the production.

This was Lugo’s first musical theatre performance at Milligan. She called it the “most incredible experience” and said “Professor Carhart was amazing to work with.”

“I love all the fun lifts I get to do, and my interactions with the Cat in the Hat!” Lugo said.

One challenge, Lugo said, was building the endurance needed for the show’s constant movement, but the experience was “very worth it.”

Senior Conner Roberts played the Cat in the Hat.

For Roberts, this was his last musical theatre production in college. He said it was “a solid one to end with because it’s just a wholesome, fun, family time.”

Roberts said he enjoyed the song “How Lucky You Are” because “I get to do a Louis Armstrong impression, and he is a legend.”

“The coworkers I’ve worked with have made the show very fun,” Roberts said.

Roberts said the biggest challenge was handling the three lifts in the show while staying in shape for them.

Roberts said he relates to the Cat in the Hat because the character’s comedic personality fits his own acting style and personality.

“Good job to everyone on stage,” Roberts said. “They have made rehearsal fun and engaging in what has been a very stressful year.”
