Milligan University announced Feb. 10 that Jamie Graves has been named head coach of its men’s and women’s swim teams.

Graves returns to the Appalachian Athletic Conference after serving as head coach at King University from 2017 to 2021. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Carson-Newman University for three years beginning in 2012.

A former collegiate swimmer, Graves competed at the University of Tennessee, where he was an honorary All-American and co-captain. He swam the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle and was a four-time Southeastern Conference finalist. He began his college career at Northern Illinois University, earning a bachelor’s degree in music while also working as an assistant coach for the Kishwaukee YMCA Swim Team. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tennessee and a Master of Arts in teaching from Carson-Newman.

Graves said he plans to build on the program’s existing culture.

“I am most excited about the opportunity to build on the great foundation this program has established, and press into the heart of it all even more, which to me is Jesus,” Graves said. “My experience so far has been incredible, from winning conference to getting to be a part of the great traditions the seniors on this team have established. I hope to continue to help develop the character of this team and prepare the next generation of servant leaders here at Milligan.”

Freshman swimmer and nursing major Jocelyn Waits said she has been encouraged by her early interactions with Graves.

“He is very personable and easy to talk to about anything and is also very understanding,” Waits said. “After talking with him more at conference, I am excited to see how I do in my future with college swimming.”

Graves also serves as an assistant worship leader at Celebration Church Tri-Cities. He and his wife, Chesley, have three children.

He takes over both programs as Milligan continues competition this season.
