Milligan’s men’s and women’s tennis teams competed at the ITA Regional Small College Championships in Owensboro, Kentucky, from Sept. 24-28, with players advancing through multiple rounds in singles and doubles.

The Lady Buffs had several players compete in singles throughout the tournament. Lee Anne Endler advanced to the round of 32 after winning a close match in the round of 64, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Madison Berry, Parker White and Lauren Wimmer also advanced to the round of 64.

The men’s singles team had four players advance to the round of 32. Tomas Tenil, Martin Mercader, Gonzaga Lafarga and Phil Schöllhorn each won their opening matches. Lafarga and Mercader advanced to the round of 16 before their tournament runs ended.

“One thing I learned was that even when you have two match points, you still have to finish the match. Losing after being that close was frustrating, but it showed me that I need to stay focused until I win that final ball,” said Curlej.

In women’s doubles, all three Milligan teams advanced to the round of 16. Duarte and Berry continued to the quarterfinals after an 8-7 (7-5) tiebreak victory, while Wimmer and White and Endler and Candela ended their tournament runs in the round of 16.

“I think this tournament was a good season starter. We had good competition and tight matches, and we really got a good rhythm for the rest of our season,” said Duarte.

In men’s doubles, Curlej and Mercader and Lafarga and Schöllhorn both earned opening-round victories. Lafarga and Schöllhorn advanced to the round of 16 after an 8-0 win in the round of 32.

The Buffs will return to action Oct. 15 when they travel to Emory & Henry. Find more information on milliganbuffs.com.
