On Saturday and Sunday, Milligan’s orchestra and choirs will perform their annual Christmas Concert. Both performances will be at 7:30 in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Seeger Chapel. Tickets are free but must be reserved prior to the concert using www.milligan.edu/christmas

The concert will feature Milligan’s choirs and orchestra. While these ensembles typically rehearse separately during the semester, they come together on many of the pieces being performed this weekend.

“While there are some pieces on the program that feature just the orchestra, or organ, or a cappella choirs, much of the concert are pieces for choir and orchestra together,” said professor of music and orchestra director Dr. Kellie Brown. “This gives a full, rich sound along with the message of words.”

After the lack of a Christmas concert last year, the musicians are looking forward to bringing the tradition back.

“The absence has made people miss playing and hearing live Christmas music,” said senior bass player Ethan Wymer. “This year will be huge in attendance because of the two year anticipation. As an orchestra, we are working very hard to make sure it’s an amazing experience for those who attend.”

The program for the concert will include pieces played every year as well as some different selections.

“Our Annual Christmas concert is structured to where there are beautiful and moving pieces that we do every year. They are our tradition in much the same way as the candle lighting is,” said Dr. Brown. “In between these yearly pieces we also feature new repertoire. I always look forward to learning new music but also love revisiting the beloved classics we do every year.”

The concert provides SFP credit for the students who attend.

“I wish the Milligan community knew that this is one SFP event that actually contributes to spiritual formation,” said Wymer. “This musical experience moves people in incredible ways. The music elevates your soul to a place where you actually feel closer to God.”
