Students took the stage at the first student recital of the semester, which took place in Lower Seeger on Oct. 1.
The event included junior music performance major Casey Roberts, who performed his junior recital.
Music students are required to perform a junior and senior recital. A junior recital entails 30 minutes of performance by the student, with senior recitals lasting an hour.
Roberts said he hopes the audience “learned to appreciate music more” and was “transported into another place” with his musical selections.
Roberts said the most rewarding part of singing for him is being able to have an emotional investment in songs and see the audience have that same experience as well.
In contrast, one of the challenges of learning the repertoire for the recital, Roberts said, was “breathing, phrasing and putting in lots of work to portray a character.”
Other musical selections included “With You” from “Ghost the Musical,” “Light in the Piazza” from “The Light in the Piazza” and “When He Sees Me” from “Waitress.”
Freshman vocal performance major Jenna Winstead said she loved “seeing the expression of the singers.”
Winstead said she enjoyed Roberts’ performance of “The Street Where You Live” from “My Fair Lady.”
Senior music education major Carter Dickerson said, “I’m proud of everyone that came tonight. I’m proud to see my classmates grow, and I love to see music bring us all together.”
Dickerson said that his favorite piece of music from Roberts’ performance was “La mi sola, Laureola.” He said it was “wonderful” to hear something he hadn’t heard before.
Reflecting on his own experience, Roberts said his favorite lyrics were from his first song, “If Music Be the Food of Love”:
“If music be the food of love, sing on!”
