Milligan’s radio station, WUMC 90.5, was chosen to participate in the 15th annual World College Radio Day’s 24-hour global marathon on Oct. 3.
On the theme, “tune into the people,” junior Gabby Jones led a conversation about the diverse musical cultures around Milligan.Which featured four different genres: bluegrass, mariachi, Bosnian music and hip-hop.
“I thought about how many people go to Milligan and are from different places,” she said. “And it’d be really fun to talk about people who are from different cultures and the music that comes from that and how that builds them as a person.”
Jones said initially she was excited to gain a new experience from the Milligan radio club and put the “multi” in “multimedia.”
A live kickoff event for the radio station, looking forward to World College Radio Day, took place on Oct. 2. Speakers for this event included Claire Garwood, Irie Manning and Vaughn De La Cruz. These three students featured an array of topics on the radio: local musical artists centered in East Tennessee, ministry and theater, and an interview with a student athlete.
Sophomore Irie Manning spoke about theater and ministry and how they intertwine.
“Theater is important to me not only because of the way I’ve seen so many people affected by it, but the people that are a part of that community,” she said. “Theatre has been my passion for a long time but something that trumps that is my ministry.”
Freshman Vaughn De La Cruz interviewed a student athlete on the baseball team and gave insight into what it looks like to follow God and be a part of sports simultaneously.
For De La Cruz, his goal was to inform a wider audience about what it means to be a student-athlete at Milligan.
“People tend to think that if you play a sport in college, that’s all you get to do,” he said. “I wanted to make it a point to explain what it’s like to be a Christian here on Milligan’s campus, and how you can spread your ministry.”
