A new Master of Arts in Coaching and Sport Management (MACSM) will be available for students starting in the 2022 fall semester.

This new, two-year program will require thirty-six credit hours and is designed for students interested in pursuing leadership roles in collegiate athletics. Students from any undergraduate discipline can apply for the program.

“Sport-related fields remain attractive for a number of professionals,” said Associate Professor of Exercise Science, Dr. Trini Rangel. “Not only do many current athletes see themselves as coaches one day, but there is an attractiveness for business-minded individuals to consider using their skills in the athletic/sports venue.”

The program will allow students to focus on traditional coaching practices and also aspects of athletic administration. Some of the courses in the curriculum include the following: Sports Law and Ethics, Integration of Faith and Sport, Advanced Injury Prevention, Sports Nutrition, Facility Management, and Managing Human Resources.

“We plan to provide some of the basic exercise science/coaching classes for which a person might be interested, in the event that they didn’t study a similar discipline in their undergrad, as well as some other electives to be completed by those who’ve come through our undergraduate program or another similar program somewhere else,” Rangel said.

Internships, including assistant coaching positions, with many of Milligan’s athletic teams, will also be available for students in the MACSM program according to Rangel.

Those interested in signing up for the program must fill out an application form, submit a resume and send in a personal statement describing how the MACSM program will help them achieve their professional goals.
